Sustained gunfire and NATO's preference for precision strikes consume munitions at different rates. Precision can reduce the number of weapons needed for a particular effect, but it does not make ammunition depth irrelevant. Stockpile-duration estimates still look optimistic once a high-intensity campaign begins. Modern gun-cruiser speculation therefore rests partly on logistics: planners must ask what a weapon can hit and how long the force can keep firing it.

Precision strikes do not remove the ammunition problem
NATO's preference for precision attack may reduce expenditure against some targets, but wartime stocks may still run out sooner than planners assume.
