Postwar destroyers combine dual-purpose guns and ASW weapons

Six improved 4.5-inch guns could offer more useful firepower than eight older weapons, alongside the anti-submarine and torpedo armament needed for a balanced screen.

Notes

Postwar destroyers gained more effective guns even when the number of barrels fell. The Daring-class example compares six 4.5-inch guns with the Tribal class's eight 4.7-inch guns. Better stabilization and fire control, useful range, and good firing arcs made the newer mounts more effective against aircraft. The combination of guns, Limbo anti-submarine mortars, and torpedoes supported screening and attacks on detected threats. Destroyers also provided gunfire support in Korea, continuing their wartime movement into missions associated with cruisers.
