Russian missile development and the loss of technical continuity

Economic disruption and gaps in engineer training help explain the long path from late Cold War studies to service entry in 2019.

Notes

The S-350's development is traced to studies near the end of the Cold War, with formal work beginning in 1999 and service entry in 2019. The collapse of the Soviet Union brought economic disruption and broke up training and recruitment pipelines. Gaps in experienced engineers and other skilled personnel help explain why a recently introduced system can rest on much older development work. Some technical information also appears to have come from South Korea and elsewhere.
