Portsmouth's easier dock site would be less useful

A proposed Portsmouth carrier dock presents a classic infrastructure tradeoff between construction difficulty and long-term ship-handling value.

Notes

One proposed site would require a hard turn by a Queen Elizabeth-class carrier entering or leaving the dock. The alternative would demand temporary water barriers and substantial alteration of existing harbour works. Its straighter, potentially double-ended approach would be harder and costlier to build. Once complete, however, that layout would offer much better operational utility over the dock's lifetime.
