The politics behind 'unsinkable bulwarks'

Political memories of Jutland and prestige attached to 16-inch guns pushed Britain toward heavily protected battle-line ships.

Notes

In this interpretation, political demands for 'unsinkable bulwarks' grew from treating Jutland's battlecruiser losses primarily as a protection failure. Accepting that explanation served Beatty's interests by diverting attention from command decisions and supporting his demand for a 16-inch-gun ship. Nelson and Rodney therefore maximized armor, heavy guns, and battle-line credibility. The result was optimized for standing in a line of battle, with less speed for fast response and worldwide presence.
