Pembroke, originally Pater Yard, disappeared from the navy's major docking table and ceased naval operation in 1926. The closure followed the sharp fall in Admiralty spending after the First World War. During the 1930s the Royal Air Force developed Pembroke Dock for flying boats and reused some surviving buildings as hangars and support facilities. The transition shows how fiscal choices can end one form of military-industrial capacity while leaving a site available for a different service and technology.
