Pegasus engines and Far East logistics

Sharing the Bristol Pegasus with the Swordfish promised simpler spares and maintenance for a fleet preparing to fight far from Britain.

Notes

The Walrus used the same Bristol Pegasus engine family as the Fairey Swordfish, reflecting repeated Royal Navy efforts to standardize aircraft powerplants. Rapid engine development made that goal difficult because a better design was always arriving before standardization could settle. War with Japan, on the opposite side of the world from Britain's industrial base, was the fleet's hardest logistical case. Common engines could reduce the variety of spares carried and let carrier workshops support more aircraft with the same machinery and expertise. The engine specification therefore belonged to a larger plan for sustaining naval aviation at extreme distance.
