Repulse historically received three triple low-angle four-inch mounts and six single high-angle guns because the 4.5-inch system was not ready. The alternate fit substitutes six twin 4.7-inch mounts, reducing the total from 15 barrels to 12 but making every gun available against both ships and aircraft. This does not automatically save Force Z. Repulse's aggressive manoeuvring combined with a stronger disruptive barrage might improve her prospects, while Prince of Wales's doctrinal and operational problems remain much harder to overcome.
