Chapter · 2:07:41-2:10:45

Force Z depends on carriers, fighters, and earlier losses

Force Z's fate changes through a cumulative chain involving surviving escorts, carrier availability, fighter coordination, ship manoeuvre, and Japanese luck. The gun alone is insufficient.

Notes

The Japanese bombers attacking Force Z were land-based and unescorted, so a carrier fighter screen or correctly coordinated Singapore fighters could have broken up the strike. Earlier reductions in destroyer and carrier damage might leave more escorts or a carrier available for the deployment. Repulse could plausibly survive with fewer torpedo hits, while Prince of Wales remains much less likely to escape. This was a different tactical problem from Pearl Harbor, Midway, or Coral Sea, and the scenario does not guarantee a rescue.
