Alex Clarke's father, who worked on several Type 23s, favoured a slightly longer hull with a second 32-cell Sea Wolf launcher aft. He also wanted sixteen Harpoons when the ships were built. The proposal would have added a substantial missile battery at the stern instead of retaining the concentration forward. The completed design kept its 4.5-inch gun, Sea Wolf, and Harpoon forward, with machinery amidships and aviation facilities aft.
