Chapter ยท 4:53-5:49

Osmaniye-class broadside ironclads from Britain

Osmaniye led four British-built Ottoman ironclads, originally designed as broadside ships with heavy guns concentrated along each side.

Notes

The ship was the lead vessel of a four-ship class built for the Ottoman Empire in the 1860s, with construction divided between Robert Napier and Sons on the Clyde and Thames Ironworks. Their original battery placed fourteen 8-inch and ten 36-pounder guns along the broadsides. A target on one side could therefore face only seven of the 8-inch weapons and five of the 36-pounders. That original battery provides the baseline for judging how reconstruction changed the class's fighting value.
