Operating hours can matter more than calendar age

Compare racing engines with ship propulsion to see why duty cycle, continuous running, and maintenance history are better wear measures than years alone.

Notes

A high-performance racing engine may wear quickly relative to its expected use, yet it still runs only intermittently. Ship machinery can instead operate around the clock for prolonged periods and may accumulate extraordinary hours within the same number of calendar years. The contrast separates apparent age from actual mechanical duty. Maintenance opportunities matter, but so does whether operational demands ever permit machinery to be shut down. A replacement assessment should therefore reconstruct operating hours and load history rather than infer wear from commission date.
