Oleg paired cruiser capability with a maintenance burden

The modern protected cruiser Oleg had useful speed and firepower, but persistent spare-parts trouble exposed the expedition's inability to sustain even its stronger ships.

Notes

Oleg was a recently commissioned Bogatyr-class protected cruiser capable of about 23 knots and armed with twelve 6-inch guns. She may have been Russia's best cruiser pound for pound at Tsushima. Persistent spare-parts problems during the voyage show that a modern design could not escape the fleet's maintenance and supply constraints. Damaged in the battle, Oleg escaped with Aurora and Zhemchug to Manila, where internment ended their participation in the war. Her later survival through Baltic operations and eventual sinking by a British coastal motor boat in 1919 also makes her a useful bridge from Tsushima to the naval conflicts that followed.
