Why a fast ocean liner cannot become a battleship

A naval-architecture answer draws the line between viable liner conversions and an unstable attempt to disguise a capital ship.

Question

Could a 55,000-70,000-ton, 36-knot liner be designed to accept heavy battleship turrets and armor?

Short answer

It could become an auxiliary cruiser or carrier, but its tall passenger hull and stability characteristics make heavy battleship guns impractical.

Notes

Liners can make effective fast transports, auxiliary cruisers with roughly 6-inch weapons, or imperfect aircraft-carrier conversions because those roles exploit their speed and volume. Heavy turrets impose recoil, concentrated weight, and stability demands for which a tall passenger hull is not shaped. Removing upper hull sections does not erase the underlying differences in hull form, metacentric height, and structural purpose.
