Chapter · 1:55:46-1:58:11

How the Norwegian Sea campaign might unfold

Carrier groups, amphibious forces, and submarines would fight in depth between the GIUK barrier, Norway, and the Soviet bastion rather than in one decisive fleet action.

Notes

NATO carrier groups would form Strike Fleet Atlantic and push north with amphibious forces following behind toward Norway. Soviet submarines would batter at the GIUK Gap to disrupt force concentration, troop movements, and commerce, while NATO attack submarines pressed through the Norwegian Sea toward Soviet operations and the bastion. Both sides would face cold-weather infrastructure limits and reluctance to strip forces from the central European front. A Soviet advance toward Iceland or Greenland could force major American reinforcement, but an overly successful NATO attack on strategic submarines could bring the campaign close to nuclear escalation.
