North Carolina shows what 35,000 tons could deliver

North Carolina's displacement, 16-inch armament, and speed make the 35,000-ton treaty limit concrete.

Notes

North Carolina's roughly 35,000 long tons standard and 44,000 tons at full load make the difference between treaty displacement and a fully loaded ship concrete. The design combines nine 16-inch guns in three triple turrets with a 28-knot top speed and a 12-inch armour belt, compared with the Nelson class's 13-inch belt. Its secondary battery has twenty 5-inch/38 dual-purpose guns in ten twin mounts. The armament list also includes sixteen 1.1-inch anti-aircraft guns and eighteen .50-calibre machine guns. These characteristics challenge a simple ranking of Bismarck as the period's most powerful battleship by drawing attention to several 16-inch-gunned competitors. Nelson and Rodney were slower, but Rodney's role in disabling Bismarck shows why gun power and tactical circumstances still mattered.
