A more coherent 9.2-inch cruiser

A redesigned 9.2-inch armoured cruiser could have offered a much more formidable intermediate type between light cruisers and capital ships.

Notes

Twin 9.2-inch turrets suggest a dreadnought-style alternative to Minotaur's mixed battery, including twin mountings in wing positions. A roughly 15,000-ton cruiser built on that basis could have been useful enough for the Royal Navy to want to retain it into the 1930s. This is a proposed alternative design, with the exact arrangement partly explained by reference to the image on screen. For a Deutschland-class raider, combining protection against 6-inch fire with long range and speed already requires compromises within its displacement. Protection against 8-inch fire is harder to accommodate, and 9.2-inch guns would present a still greater threat. The Battle of the River Plate supplies an 8-inch comparison through HMS Exeter and Admiral Graf Spee. Claims that Exeter caused all Graf Spee's damage are questioned, without an alternative allocation of hits being given. The proposed cruiser occupies an intermediate position between lighter cruisers and capital ships.
