New Orleans survives catastrophic damage and returns to war

A survivor's description of New Orleans without her bow leads into the larger American advantage in repairing damaged cruisers and replacing losses.

Notes

USS New Orleans lost 125 feet of bow, turret one, and about 1,800 tons of structure. A crewman's recollection conveys the human shock of discovering that the forward part of the ship and many shipmates were simply gone. Despite that damage, New Orleans and Pensacola returned to service in 1943, while Northampton's loss was replaced within the growth of the American fleet. Damage control and repair infrastructure kept a severe tactical defeat from permanently removing equivalent American strength.
