USS New Ironsides was built quickly to defeat Confederate threats, while HMS Warrior was intended to demonstrate the strength of British maritime industry. The United States was not yet regarded as a comparable naval-industrial power. Even so, New Ironsides was ordered in October 1861, launched in May 1862, and commissioned in August. Few countries had attempted such a warship, which makes the construction schedule evidence of American industrial potential. She was not an exceptional sailing ship, but ironclad design required compromises in hull form, armour, machinery, and rig. Her value lay in how well she met the mission for which she was built.
