Nembo's oil-fired refit and high-speed endurance

Oil firing improved Nembo's endurance, while armament changes brought the ships closer to a common standard.

Notes

Oil-fired boilers fitted from 1908 improved the Nembo class and gave the ships a third funnel. The quoted range after conversion was 330 nautical miles at 25 knots, compared with 2,200 nautical miles at 9 knots. Fast operations therefore remained sharply limited even after the improvement. Nembo and Turbine exchanged their 57 mm guns for four 76 mm guns and gained two more torpedo tubes, bringing them closer to their sisters. A 76 mm gun was a substantial weapon against the small warships these destroyers were expected to fight.
