Nelson-class machinery, weapons, and armor

A compact technical profile sets the Nelson class's 23-knot machinery against nine 16-inch guns and heavy concentrated armor.

Notes

The ships used eight Admiralty three-drum boilers and geared turbines delivering 45,000 shaft horsepower to two shafts. Their main battery was backed by twelve 6-inch guns, 4.7-inch anti-aircraft weapons, and very large submerged torpedo tubes. Belt, deck, barbette, turret, conning-tower, and bulkhead figures show how heavily the protected core was built. The technical inventory also exposes the compromise: a formidable citadel and armament were paired with modest speed and concern about how much of the waterline was protected.
