From naval wages to local spending and tax receipts

Dependable naval contracts carry public spending into households, civilian employment, exports, and tax receipts.

Notes

Predictable naval orders give yards and suppliers confidence in employment across armaments, machinery, boilers, plumbing, furniture, aviation, and electronics. Workers then spend on food, housing, entertainment, transport, and consumer goods, supporting jobs beyond the naval supply chain. Most major powers would place much of the work in their own economies, although imports could carry some spending abroad, as with possible Italian purchases of British turbines. Foreign naval demand could add export work for the supplying country. Contracts also create legal and civil-service work, while employment turns benefit recipients into taxpayers. This spending could ease an economic downturn, though warship construction alone would not cure the Great Depression.
