How transferable were sailors between naval gun crews?

Gunnery skills transferred most easily between weapons of similar scale; moving from a five-inch mount to a sixteen-inch turret required learning a much larger ammunition and machinery organization.

Question

Could a sailor move easily from a five-inch gun crew to a sixteen-inch gun crew?

Short answer

Transfers were easier between comparable mountings. A sixteen-inch turret used a much larger crew and ammunition-handling system, so a five-inch gun crew could not simply take over unchanged.

Notes

A five-inch gun mount uses a relatively small crew with ammunition handlers below decks. A battleship turret adds many sailors in the barbette and ammunition supply system, with machinery assisting the movement of large shells and powder charges. The difference therefore extends beyond the gun's calibre to the scale and organization of the entire mounting. Transfers between similar secondary batteries, or between cruiser main batteries with comparable requirements, are easier because more of the sailors' existing skills carry across. Moving directly from a five-inch mount to a sixteen-inch turret would require learning a substantially different system.
