Why naval aero engineers needed direct links with industry

Several naval and Air Ministry offices separated Fleet Air Arm experience from the engineers designing its aircraft.

Notes

Naval aero engineers needed direct contact with aircraft companies to learn what industry could build and translate operational needs into engineering requirements. Retaining pilots alone would not provide that connection. The rear admiral responsible for aircraft carriers consulted Royal Navy observers because the pilots belonged to the RAF. Requirements then passed through the Admiralty and Air Ministry to industry, with technical feedback returning through the same chain. Each translation created another opportunity for error even when the people involved were competent and acting in good faith.
