How a stronger Soviet fleet could reshape NATO commitments

A Soviet postwar battlefleet could make carrier groups and major surface escorts central to NATO from its formation.

Notes

A visible Soviet surface threat could put carrier groups and major escorts into NATO's formal commitments when the alliance formed in 1949. Britain might retain HMS Vanguard and Anson longer, perhaps also Duke of York and King George V. The loss of Prince of Wales and Repulse demonstrated the danger from aircraft. In the Mediterranean, Nelson and Rodney survived damage under carrier cover and remained useful when opposing battleships also had air support. When neither side held complete air control, battleships could still protect carriers and provide heavy surface fire. Carriers, aircraft, fast capital ships, and escorts would operate as one force.
