Royal Navy carriers in NATO's Atlantic war plan

British carriers had a NATO role in the North Atlantic alongside American and French carrier groups, not only an east-of-Suez mission.

Notes

The Royal Navy expected to protect Atlantic convoys, reinforce Norway, and support operations around the Greenland-Iceland-United Kingdom gap. British, American, and French carriers could combine under NATO's Atlantic strike command and push into the high north. Their aircraft would fight Soviet submarines and bombers while threatening Soviet territory. That offensive pressure was intended to divert Soviet forces from attacking reinforcement convoys, showing why carrier utility cannot be judged only through Britain's imperial withdrawals.
