The N3's 18-inch guns and the escalation trap

Nine 18-inch guns promised British superiority but risked setting a new baseline that rival navies would immediately exceed.

Notes

The N3's battery represented the logic of preserving naval supremacy through the largest practical gun. Any advantage would be temporary because American and Japanese responses would push the next designs toward even larger weapons. Each increase imposed immense turret, ammunition, barrel, canal, and industrial costs. The result could be a fleet of individually powerful ships too expensive to build in useful numbers, turning technical superiority into a force-structure weakness.
