Could a warship engage several targets at once?

An early audience question explains why multiple fire-control computers did not necessarily let every turret engage a different ship effectively.

Question

Could ships with multiple fire-control computers assign each turret to a different target?

Short answer

Sometimes, but fire-control arrangements varied and each target usually needed three or four guns, so several turrets might still have to work together.

Notes

Fire-control capacity varied by ship and period: some vessels had only one system, while others carried two or three. Even with multiple computers, effective fire generally required three or four guns against each target. A single turret might therefore suffice on a ship with large multi-gun mountings, but other designs would need several turrets per target. The number of fire-control channels has to be considered alongside practical salvo strength, rather than assuming one independent target for every turret.
