The Mosquito's first carrier landing

Wings on My Sleeve recalls a slower-than-expected landing and unexpectedly gentle arrestment for a 16,000-pound Mosquito.

Notes

Brown's approach offered a clear view of the deck and the batsman, although funnel gases near the stern disturbed the aircraft and its low-speed aileron response was poor. Easing the throttles before cutting them fully avoided an abrupt drop and bounce. The Mosquito caught the second wire and stopped with a surprisingly gentle pull. Film showed a landing speed of 78 miles per hour against an expectation of about 85. Smooth sea airflow, without nearby buildings or trees, helped explain why the landing differed from trials ashore. Instrument readings also showed mild loads despite the aircraft's 16,000-pound weight.
