Warship size bands and presence missions

Recurring displacement bands connect a warship's size to its mission, with global presence requiring more endurance and independence than a narrower combat role.

Notes

Weapons, sensors, geography, threats, risk, and construction all affect warship size. Global presence ships repeatedly cluster around 9,000 to 10,000 tons because they must sustain themselves, represent their country, and conduct diplomacy far from home. HMS Warrior, squadron leaders, the Hawkins-class cruiser limit, and an Arleigh Burke destroyer provide comparisons across different eras. The smaller bands identified are roughly 2,000 to 3,000 tons for general-purpose or single-mission warships and 6,000 to 7,000 tons for more flexible single-mission assets. Computing adds substantial space demands, but power generation, personnel, and weapon systems still occupy roughly comparable shares of the hull.
