From mixed gun batteries to VLS loadouts

The pre-dreadnought problem of carrying a weapon for every contingency has a modern parallel in choosing VLS loadouts and missile-carrying hulls.

Notes

The comparison moves from mixed-calibre batteries to a modern vertical-launch system carrying missiles for several missions. Such flexibility makes sense in peacetime, when the next contingency is uncertain. In war, Arleigh Burke-class ships might concentrate on air defense while uncrewed carriers move strike missiles or reloads to the fleet. Arming amphibious ships with long-range strike weapons would make them higher-priority targets and force them to devote more protection to self-defense.
