Why modern destroyers build more like capital ships

Modern destroyer production is constrained by cruiser-like roles and capital-ship levels of systems complexity.

Notes

Current destroyer construction cannot be compared directly with the simpler mass programmes of the 1930s and 1940s. Modern ships combine cruiser-like roles with systems complexity closer to that of earlier capital ships. Peacetime programmes also pursue a highly refined ship in each hull. Earlier fleets often accepted the merely necessary design so they could maintain numbers and construction pace.
