A mixed air fleet protected by distance

The inventory of Ju 86 bombers, ageing fighters, He 115 seaplanes, and Ca.313 variants shows how distance partly compensated for Sweden's small and uneven air arm.

Notes

Sweden's mixed aircraft inventory included seventy-two Junkers Ju 86 bombers but only limited numbers of modern fighters and maritime strike machines. Types such as the Seversky P-35, Hawker Hart, Bristol Bulldog, and older Swedish biplanes could still function, yet did not amount to a powerful fighter screen. Geography supplied some protection because enemy fighters might lack the range to escort bombers deep into Swedish airspace. For maritime attack, twelve Heinkel He 115 seaplanes offered dispersal across Sweden's lakes and coastal waters, while the Caproni Ca.313 and its T16 variant pointed toward greater local production. Range, dispersed basing, and industrial learning partly substituted for mass.
