Missile support, seawater protection, and ship zoning

Grouped missile systems share cooling and maintenance needs, while raised launch cells and separate aft aviation spaces protect vulnerable equipment from heat and seawater.

Notes

Grouped weapons can share the temperature control, maintenance access, and other support their magazines require. British designs place particular emphasis on protecting missile cells from seawater. Type 45's forward vertical-launch area is raised and enclosed even though the surrounding structure complicates the effort to reduce radar signature. Aft space is assigned to 30 mm guns, Phalanx, the hangar, flight deck, and aviation-fuel arrangements. The resulting zoning separates offensive, close-defence, and aviation functions according to their support and hazard relationships rather than firing arcs alone.
