Four Rolls-Royce Olympus TM3B gas turbines provided machinery redundancy, alongside eight Paxman Valenta diesel generators. The machinery figures are 110,000 shaft horsepower across two shafts, 28 knots, and 7,000 nautical miles at 18 knots. Displacement is 16,000 tons light and 22,000 tons fully loaded, on a hull 209 metres long with a 36-metre beam and an 8-metre draught. Later arrangements could accommodate 500 marines. A ship's company of about 650 and an air group complement of about 350 put the normal total around a thousand, much higher than estimates that count only aviation personnel.
