Larger machinery spaces can reduce maintenance labour

Interwar destroyer arguments connect room around equipment with the time and crew needed to maintain it.

Notes

Admiral Henderson and other Royal Navy advocates used maintenance access as an argument for larger destroyers. A bigger hull carrying the same equipment gives sailors more room to reach it. Less time spent gaining access leaves more of the working day for repairs. Tightly packed equipment adds labour to each task and can require more people to sustain the same maintenance rate.
