Sea Hurricane Mk.IBs began embarking in converted merchant aircraft carriers in October 1941 alongside anti-submarine aircraft. These MAC ships improved on the one-way CAM concept by adding a short flight deck for a small mixed air group. They still had no hangar, leaving aircraft and maintainers exposed while supporting convoys to the Soviet Union. An embarked aircraft's usefulness depended on launch and recovery space as well as the logistics of keeping it serviceable in severe weather.

MAC ships add a flight deck but no Arctic shelter
Merchant aircraft carriers could recover Sea Hurricanes and anti-submarine aircraft, but their lack of hangars made maintenance exceptionally difficult on Arctic convoys.
