The nine M89 destroyers France could not build

The M89 programme envisaged nine fleet destroyers with 140 mm guns and eight torpedo tubes, but France could not create the capacity to build them in time.

Notes

The proposed M89 ships were general-purpose fleet destroyers, distinct from the much larger French destroyer types of the interwar period. Nine were planned with 140 mm guns and eight 18-inch torpedo tubes. Possible layouts include two triple mountings and a twin, or four twin mountings. A more complicated combination of two twins, a triple, and a single is also mentioned, but judged unlikely. None of the nine reached construction because France lacked the time to build up the industry needed to turn the plans into ships.
