Why the little ships mattered in mass

Small escorts, trawlers, corvettes, and frigates supplied the numerical mass that sustained maritime war beyond the famous capital ships.

Notes

Civilian little ships at Dunkirk helped move troops from the beaches without exposing every available naval vessel to the same risk. A much broader wartime fleet included destroyers, naval trawlers, Flower-class corvettes, and River-class frigates. The combined Royal Navy and Commonwealth total ran into well over a thousand small vessels, far exceeding the famous battleships and carriers that dominate popular accounts. These ships performed escort and patrol work across theatres, including work beyond the Battle of the Atlantic. Their numerical mass released scarce major units for tasks that genuinely required greater speed, range, or firepower. Force structure cannot be judged only by its most prestigious hulls.
