Sectional shipbuilding and factory production both predated the Liberty program. Other yards had experimented with modules, while British royal dockyards had long used production lines for standardized fittings such as blocks and tackles. The Liberty program changed the scale and influence of these methods. Like Ford's industrialization of the assembly line, it turned one possible approach into the expected way to organize production. Applying modular assembly across thousands of oceangoing hulls then built the experience needed to extend the method gradually to more complex ships.

Liberty ships turn modular construction into an industrial standard
Liberty shipbuilding did for modular ship construction what Ford had done for the moving production line: it made a proven method dominant at scale.
