Rendezvous with Lexington and Enterprise

Meeting Lexington and Enterprise adds carrier aircraft, heavy cruisers, and enough destroyers to turn the battle line into a more balanced fleet formation.

Notes

The two carrier task forces could contribute six eight-inch cruisers, thirteen destroyers, and two fleet carriers. Lexington had only recently put to sea, and both she and Enterprise were close enough on 6 December for a rendezvous. Combined with the cruisers already attached to the battle line, that produces two full heavy-cruiser squadrons while leaving the four light cruisers in their existing roles. Carrier destroyers could bring the second flotilla toward full strength and still provide plane guards. Lexington and Enterprise also supply the aircraft that solve much of the battle line's scouting deficit. Their air groups need not be perfectly prepared for combat to make a diplomatic demonstration credible, but fuel remains the condition that lets the enlarged formation operate rather than merely assemble.
