Large hangars and twin-engine carrier aircraft

Large Admiral-class conversions could encourage twin-engine naval aircraft and alter the hangar layout of later carriers.

Notes

Large Admiral-class conversions might have carried tall single hangars resembling those of Lexington and Saratoga. Their capacity could exceed the practical ability to operate an air group of more than 100 aircraft, encouraging fewer, larger twin-engine strike aircraft or fighters. That approach would also suit the Royal Navy's desired operating ranges. Experience with those aircraft could change Ark Royal's later layout: one large hangar, or separate hangars with enough height for twin-engine aircraft above a lower fighter space. The alternative low fighter hangar is suggested at roughly 14 or 15 feet, rather than giving both hangars similar heights.
