Mass production made landing craft families highly variable

Thousands of craft built by many yards, nations, and services produced wide variation within named landing-craft types.

Notes

The landing-craft families in the series were built in numbers too large and varied for a short type survey to cover exhaustively. Several thousand craft came from roughly thirty to forty manufacturers, with differences between batches. Crews made local modifications that moved individual craft farther from the nominal standard design. About a dozen nations operated them through roughly twice as many services, including navies, armies, and other organizations. That industrial and institutional variation explains why photographs, specifications, and operating practices may differ within one named landing-craft type.
