Kidd shows the route to Burke

Kidd combines stronger air defense, helicopter ASW, and adaptations for Gulf operations, providing an example of the capability mix associated with Burke.

Notes

The Kidd class combined Spruance ancestry with stronger air defense and extensive ASW capability. Ordered for Iran and acquired by the US Navy after the Iranian Revolution, the ships had extra air conditioning and water-distillation capacity suited to Gulf operations. Their approximately 10,000-ton full-load displacement accommodated a demanding set of combat systems. Land attack remained limited to their 5-inch guns. A data link with the Aegis system on Ticonderogas strengthened their air-defense contribution, while two embarked helicopters supported ASW. Their combination of capabilities is presented as a bridge between Spruance and Ticonderoga and an influence on the approach taken with Burke.
