The Saunders-Roe jet flying-boat idea

The Saunders-Roe jet flying boat imagined deploying fighter cover where airfields were scarce, using water and a tender ship as its operating base.

Notes

The Saunders-Roe SR.A/1 was a response to dispersed Far Eastern geography and limited infrastructure. It combined jet performance with a flying boat's ability to operate from remote waters, potentially supported by a mobile seaplane tender. Its intake arrangement had to keep spray out of the engines during take-off, illustrating the unusual engineering demands of the concept. The aircraft flew and was manoeuvrable, but the navy did not fund another generation as land-based and vertical-take-off alternatives matured. The proposal shows how widely postwar planners searched for ways to put fast air defence into austere theatres.
