Japanese qualitative overmatch and insufficient fleet numbers

Assumed superiority per ship could not compensate indefinitely for Japan's inability to build the required fleet numbers.

Notes

Japanese designers devoted considerable effort to exceptionally capable individual ships. That effort did not produce the number of ships the navy needed. Planning assumptions increasingly treated each Japanese ship as the equivalent of more opposing ships, progressing from two to four or six in the example. The criticism is that escalating those assumed ratios did not solve the underlying shortage.
