Why one seizure could not end Japanese oceanic voyages

Adams's larger trading vessel supplies a comparison for judging Spain's attempt to obstruct Japanese navigation.

Notes

The ship Adams used for regional trade was larger than the Japanese vessel taken by the Spanish. Confiscating a medium-sized vessel therefore could not remove all Japanese shipping capacity. Voyages over considerable distances in the South China Sea also showed navigational experience. The argument treats the seizure as an inadequate means of preventing ocean crossings. It concerns existing ships and skills, without establishing that Japan sent a retaliatory expedition.
