In Japanese service the cruiser became Izumi and exchanged its original armament for longer 6-inch guns, six 4.7-inch guns, and three 18-inch torpedo tubes. The lighter battery altered the ship's weight while its machinery still delivered about 6,500 indicated horsepower. Losing only about 300 horsepower while shedding armament weight preserved a useful speed-to-power balance. The old hull remained useful in active service.
