The first Istanbul carries an OTO Melara Super Rapid 76 mm gun, while later ships receive a Turkish-built 76 mm weapon. Developing a national gun can draw on experience with existing calibres, ammunition and operating practices. The interpretation here is that Turkish designers used those lessons to produce a weapon suited to their own needs, avoiding unnecessary reinvention. The fit also includes 25 mm guns and an ASELSAN-developed twin 35 mm close-in system. Domestic production of these weapons accompanies the expansion of Turkish warship construction.
