Ise and Hyuga as compromised hybrid carriers

The Ise-class conversion could launch aircraft, but slow speed, weak recovery arrangements, and competing battleship requirements made the hybrid operationally unconvincing.

Notes

Ise and Hyuga traded four 14-inch guns for an intended group of 22 aircraft, divided between dive bombers and reconnaissance aircraft. Their reconstructed speed of about 25 knots would slow the fast carriers they were supposed to support. The ships could launch aircraft, but their short aviation decks provided no runway for landing them. Two catapults and the need to launch clear of the guns also limited how quickly aircraft could be put into the air. The conversion retained the battleship's heavy armour and guns while adding exposed aviation fuel. Neither ship used its aircraft in combat. The result could demonstrate aircraft launch capability without offering a convincing carrier or battleship mission.
